The Love Is Blind showrunner, Chris Coelen, has some strong feelings about the state of his show. His frustrations aren’t related to the multiple allegations of behind-the-scenes mistreatment. It also has nothing to do with all of the backlash some of Season 7’s cast members have received. Instead, Chris recently explained why he wanted to see more on-camera fights.

If it’s not on camera, did it really happen?

In Season 7 of Love Is Blind, there were a handful of disagreements between the couples that happened off-camera, causing everyone at home to feel left out of the loop. When it was time for the reunion, we had a full list of unanswered questions.

For example, Alexandra Byrd and Tim Godbee broke up on camera during an argument that seemed like it was about napping. It was odd, and it seemed like it came out of nowhere. What we didn’t see was a handful of off-camera quarrels leading up to that moment.

We’re thirsty for drama, so this is obviously bad for the viewer. However, the show’s creator explained why this off-camera drama isn’t good for anyone involved. In an interview with Salon, he made the case that it’s a “detriment” for couples to withhold their truth.

He explained, “It just creates a negativity. And the people who are much more open about, ‘Hey, I’ve got an issue, “Hey, I’m feeling a certain way’ . . . ultimately, whether they work out or not, benefit from that.”

With that said, Chris noted that there are sometimes moments when the cameras just aren’t rolling. The show doesn’t film 24/7, so he said they rely on the cast members to be honest about what’s happening in their relationships. That doesn’t always happen.

“We just want to know what’s the truth, what’s happening,” Chris explained. “And so then you try to fill in the gaps.”

When talking about Season 7, Chris did commend Tim and Alex for addressing their issues at the reunion. Still, he felt like it would have been more meaningful if it happened during the “experiment,” even if their fate remained the same.

“The point isn’t that they get engaged, or [whether] they get married or not,” Chris explained. “The actual question at the heart of the series is whether that feeling, that love that many people describe, is that enough to survive whatever the real world throws at them?”

He continued, “And the people who get the altar and say yes, say, ‘I do,’ you know, the fact that 11 of those 13 couples who have done that so far are still together. . . supports the theory and the idea of what the show really is about.”

Season 7 of Love Is Blind is streaming on Netflix, and Season 8 drops on February 14, 2025.

TELL US – WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON TIM AND ALEX’S SUDDEN BREAKUP? DO YOU AGREE WITH CHRIS THAT COUPLES WOULD BENEFIT FROM ADDRESSING THEIR ISSUES ON CAMERA?
