Real Housewives of Orange County Season 18, Episode 1 Recap: Shannon and Alexis Go Head-To-Head

Finally, after months of waiting, The Real Housewives of Orange County Season 18 premiere is upon us. I’ve prepared everything orange for this occasion. I’m wearing an orange shirt, have a mimosa with Veuve, and my trusty notebook to write down all the tea. So hello, my gilded gate-loving followers, and welcome to the RHOC Season 18, Episode 1 recap for “Exes and OCs.”

The premiere episode showed Alexis and Shannon interacting right out of the gate. Tamra is still hoping she will one day reunite with her daughter Sydney. And Gina is stuck between a rock and a hard place regarding her relationship. So, let’s get straight into it and see how these women turned oranges into orangeade.

Shannon has a mountain to climb in RHOC Season 18

There is no way to sugar-coat this, but Shannon has quite the mountain to climb. None of the ladies seem too excited about continuing their friendship with her. Even Tamra explains in a confessional why she decided to pull back.

According to Tammy Sue, she canceled an appearance together shortly after Shannon’s DUI because she thought it was “in bad taste” to do a comedy show about drinking when her friend had just been arrested. The math is in fact mathing on this one.

What’s that saying? Those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Cue Shannon, who is having a hard time digging herself out of this hole she has found herself in. Gina promptly points out that after years of being tortured by Shannon for her own DUI, she has no empathy for the mom of three. “Shannon spiraled. Right into a house,” she quips. Harsh words, but accurate. And kinda funny.

Gina makes a revelation in the RHOC Season 18 premiere

Gina is at her wits’ end with Travis’ baggage, aka his ex-wife. Gina shared that the “hardest part of her relationship is not the relationship,” hinting at outside factors. When the couple started dating four-and-a-half years ago, they were both freshly divorced.

Gina is thriving in her co-parenting relationship with Matt, but it seems Travis’ ex is playing hardball and causing more destruction than she knows. So much so that Gina decided to move out of her shared condo and into a place of her own until he finalizes the divorce.

Travis and his soon-to-be ex-wife are currently bifurcated, which is when the divorcing parties ask the judge to resolve specific issues in a separate hearing rather than waiting to resolve these issues after the entire divorce process ends. Either way, Gina is unhappy and tells Emily, “Honestly, we need to live separately and see where the chips land.”

Real Housewives of Orange County Season 18, Episode 1 sees Alexis make her grand return

Okay, firstly, Alexis looks fabulous. The moment she stepped out of that UberBLACK SUV, I realized how badly she needed an orange back in those well-manicured hands. In all fairness, we’ve come a long way since Tamra threw Alexis out of the OC.

Of course Alexis comes in hot, extensions and all. Heather has brought her back into the group with open arms, noting she needs friends right now after Alexis’ mother passed away earlier in the year.

Immediately, Alexis shares her infamous love story heard around the Bravoverse. She explains that “November 18, John Janssen walked into my life. I met John at The Quiet Woman. Shannon does not own The Quiet Woman. I’ve been going there for over a decade.” Shots fired!

Alexis continues, “But anywho, John walks in and ends up sitting in my booth. We tried to fight the feelings. Unfortunately, the heart wants what it wants.”

The lunch closes with Alexis sharing her new beau’s nickname, Johnny J. I have a slight case of the ick. But Heather, in all her glory, notes, “I don’t think I have heard a better rebrand since Mayo went to Aioli.”

Shannon 12.0 makes an overdue apology

Shannon meets with her lawyer, who notes that if she completes her probation, she can petition the courts to withdraw the plea of no contest, enter a plea of not guilty, and have the case dismissed. Shannon is either beating herself up over the DUI, or she should win an Oscar for Best Actress. What I will say, is that Shannon was gutsy for deciding to attend Heather’s party. Her main concern seemed to be not getting wrinkles in her dress as she lay down like a mummy in the backseat.

However, upon walking through the door, Shannon almost immediately made a beeline to Gina and apologized. Gina was stunned at the words coming out of Shannon’s mouth. Shannon wasted no time saying, “I apologize for anything and everything I did to hurt you.”

It was apparent Gina never expected any apology sharing, “I have no idea what version of Shannon we are on at this point- 2.0, 3.0, 10.0. 12.0, but whichever version this is, I hope it sticks.” You and me both, Gina!

Find your good light

Honestly, Shannon is on a roll in the RHOC Season 18 premiere. She grabs what I can only hope is a mocktail and strolls right over to Alexis, asking for a chat. Never underestimate a woman scorned, because Shannon single-handedly moved a patio table to the shade so the other type of shade could start being thrown.

Shannon started strong, calmly talking about the lawsuit with Jim. Alexis just kept nodding, which should have been the first red flag.

Alexis didn’t entertain the conversation, noting it was in their past. She then goes for the jugular, noting it must be hard since, “you’re the ex, and I’m the new.” The conversation intensifies and includes swinging arms and villain-like smiles. Shannon was on the hamster wheel that was the lawsuit, finally asking, “Are you going to write me a check for $300,000?” I swear, at that moment, the devil on Alexis’ shoulder took over, as she stated, “I think the real issue here is I have your boyfriend.”

“You’re never going to get a dollar from me. If you don’t like it, there is the door, Shannon Beador.” In one sentence, fans are told exactly how this season of the Real Housewives of Orange County will go.

Then, in one final crack, Gina said what we were all thinking: “I just don’t care about John Janssen and his anaconda.” Neither do we, G.

The Real Housewives of Orange County continues on Thursdays at 9/8c on Bravo.

Report: King Charles III Has ‘No Clue’ Who Luann de Lesseps Is After Cabaret Invite

For people with taste, the hottest summer ticket is for Luann de Lesseps’ cabaret tour. Her new show, Marry F Kill, has attracted everyone from Lance Bass to Tilda Swinton. However, King Charles III missed the London concert date, despite receiving a personal invitation from the Countess. Was he being shady?

King Charles gives Luann de Lesseps a royal snub

Experiencing the “Feeling Jovani” songstress in person should be on every self-respecting person’s bucket list. That’s why A-listers keep turning up at her shows and why thousands of people rocked out to her set at Mighty Hoopla in London. Apparently, Luann thought that King Charles also needed to get a taste of her performance skills.

According to In Touch, Luann personally invited the 75-year-old monarch to one of her recent London shows. From one noble to another, you’d think the king would have clamored at the opportunity to hear Luann perform her hit songs. However, a palace insider claimed that reality TV just isn’t his thing.

“The king has no clue who the Real Housewives are,” the insider claimed.

“He barely knows Taylor Swift! Reality TV? Not a chance,” they continued. “His Majesty prefers documentaries and nature programs.”

Basically, they’re trying to say that the Housewives are too low-brow for the king. But, there’s an argument to be made that The Real Housewives of New York City is a documentary and a nature program. It’s highly educational — especially Season 13 with Eboni K. Williams. So, maybe it’s time for someone in the palace to get “His Majesty” on board.

Although King Charles missed Luann’s latest London show, he’ll surely have another opportunity to watch her belt out the lyrics of “Money Can’t Buy You Class.” Every week, it seems like Luann is adding more tour dates because her life is actually a cabaret.

TELL US – WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON LUANN SENDING A PERSONAL INVITATION FOR KING CHARLES TO COME TO HER SHOW? DO YOU THINK THE KING SECRETLY WATCHES BRAVO?

Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars Season 2, Episode 7 Recap: Which Team’s Demonstration Backfired?

Welcome back! Thanks for joining me as we dive into Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars Season 2, Episode 7 recap. Last time, Gordon Ramsay’s team enjoyed a sweet success in the chocolate challenge, and Lisa Vanderpump sent Maria Laura Vacaflores home.

This week’s episode, “Show and Sell” challenges the contestants to demo and sell food gadgets at a trade show. Here’s everything you need to know about Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars Season 2, Episode 7!

A daunting challenge

Team Ramsay, having won the previous challenge, hurtled down the Thames in a Thames Rocket. Meanwhile, Team Vanderpump shared a car. Womp, womp.

The setting for the next challenge is a food and beverage trade show, The International Food and Drink Event. This event will have 30,000 visitors. Wow! Lisa told the teams how important the “ability to sell” is to a business. Each team will present some kitchen gadgets, along with a $2,000 blender in front of brand reps and buyers. Oh, and they will be doing this live in three hours. No pressure!

Each team’s sales skills and presentation will be evaluated by a panel of experts in the food and drink industry. And the judges will be asked to place potential orders for the products. The team with the highest sales percentage will win.

Both Gordon and Lisa have some nerves about this challenge. Will the teams know how to sell a product and impress an audience? And can they “read the room” and know who they are selling to?

Team Ramsay

Here are the members of Gordon’s team.

  • Ali Schlichter
  • Kyson Clark
  • Andrew Whiting
  • Liz Aust
  • Rose Hankins

Rose decided to be team leader for this challenge because she had experience at a trade show. The products are unusual. There is an automatic pot stirrer and a three-in-one butter knife. Anyway, Kyson opted to present the butter knife, but his biggest concern is whether he will stutter. Finally, it is decided that Ali will present the grater, Liz will wrangle the pot stirrer, and Andrew will demo the blender.

Team Vanderpump

Here are the members of Team Vanderpump.

  • Erica Levin
  • Roman Desmond
  • Nicholas Ducos
  • Jess Druey

Nicholas stepped up as team leader because he has experience demonstrating in front of classes. So, Roman decided to present the avocado gadget, while Nicholas will demo the blender.

Erica selected the semi-automatic whisk, which left the grating tool for Jess. Although Jess tried to persuade Erica to switch with her, she was stuck with a confusing tool and zero cooking knowledge. That is a recipe for trouble.

Watch your fingers!

Jess was having a hard time with her product. Just then, Lisa showed up. When she asked what was wrong, Jess admitted that she was the only person with no cooking experience.

Then Lisa asked them to run through their presentation. When she heard that the team members were going to be sitting in the crowd, she made a face. A “that is a terrible idea” expression. Lisa worried that it seemed like a school play.

Unfortunately, as soon as she started the demo, Jess sliced her finger. “I hand her a cheese grater and she almost cuts her finger off. I’m like, ‘What the f*ck?’” Lisa commented. I guess Lisa’s sympathy meter was low that day.

Thankfully, Jess said that she was fine, and Lisa gave her the whisk to demo instead. In her confessional, a crying Jess was “overwhelmed” and “second-guessing herself” after the mishap. She felt that she let the team down, and Erica insisted that wasn’t the case.

Meanwhile, Erica had no problem sharing her feelings with Lisa. She told Lisa that she didn’t have time to make sure that Jess felt comfortable with the grater and that the “energy was frenetic and fast.” Finally, Lisa cautioned her team that they were presenting in front of “serious people.”

Prepping for their presentation

Over at Gordon’s team, the group decided to start their presentation with breakfast and move on to dinner. Most of all, Rose wanted them to prepare a fun presentation to hook the buyers.

Gordon came by and drilled down on how comfortable the team has to be with using the products. Afterward, Gordon confessed that Team Ramsay hadn’t utilized their prep time.

Next, Gordon and Lisa chatted with the panel that will be judging the challenge. Lucia Fox, who is a host on QVC, will judge along with Michael Baranowski, who is a buyer for Home Bargains, and VP of Sales for BlendTec, Chris Georgeson.

Gordon asked Lucia what was most important about a live presentation. She stated that “being authentic” and knowing all about the product were key. And reading the room was also important. As for the pitch? Michael explained that the person who is pitching needs to “have confidence in their product.”

Time for the presentations

Team Ramsay’s Rose took the stage and introduced her team members. It seemed like a high school pep rally. Kyson was up first with his butter knife, and he stuttered. My heart broke for him, but he kept going. When Kyson asked the different sides of the audience to “ooh” and “ahh,” it seemed immature. And he didn’t even spread the butter on the bread, so he didn’t fully demo the product.

Then Lucia asked what the three uses were for the knife, adding that she didn’t understand what made it different. Gordon was upset, noting that Kyson skipped the most important part of the demo. And Lisa also weighed in, calling it “a pantomime.”

Next, Rose presented a multi-blade herb scissor, while Liza demonstrated the automatic pot stirrer. But when Ali presented the grater, she had a hard time using it to slice carrots and Gordon thought that it appeared “dangerous.” Finally, Andrew knew all about the blender, and his presentation was incredible. But I loved it when, after the demo, Gordon demonstrated the butter knife, making curls of butter for Lisa.

Next, Team Vanderpump was up. Nicholas launched directly into the presentation, which focused on breakfast. He explained about the blender as he prepared a smoothie. Unfortunately, he forgot the lid. Oops! I think maybe presenting in front of their peers made both teams nervous.

When Lucia asked what else the blender could make, Nicholas replied that he liked to make soup in it. After that, Roman did a great job demonstrating the avocado tool and Erica showed off the grater. Meanwhile, Jess was energetic and really sold the whisk, even after her grating accident earlier. Chris asked a question about using the whisk to make foam out of milk, and Jess answered easily and confidently.

Afterward, Nicholas admitted that he missed talking about some of the blender’s functions. And Lisa felt her team was “slick” and “professional,” while Gordon thought that the demo was too quick.

Who won the challenge?

The teams gathered to hear the feedback. Team Ramsay was applauded for their “energy,” but the judges thought that they were “too informal” and that the demonstration “wasn’t aimed at the right audience.”

Meanwhile, Team Vanderpump was complimented on their “flow,” but not all the functions on every product were demonstrated.

Let’s not forget that the experts were asked if they would purchase the products based solely on the demos that they witnessed. Team Vanderpump had 50% of the possible sales, while Team Ramsay received 33% of the possible sales. That set off a series of f-bombs from Gordon.

The Grilling

Gordon started by announcing how unhappy he was as soon as his team sat down. As the team leader, Rose spoke up, explaining why getting the audience “comfortable” and “engaged” before you start selling was important. Gordon then asked about their lack of professionalism.

Gordon was upset that it was more like “a show” and the actual demos didn’t work. He reminded his team that he told them to “read the room.” He added, “Well, what the f*ck room were you guys in?”

Gordon was so agitated that he kept pacing. He questioned the decision to open the presentation like they were at a sports game. Rose took responsibility, and Gordon reminded her that they were presenting to “powerful individuals.”

Next, Gordon put Ali in the hot seat for not knowing more about the product and practicing with it. She acknowledged that her part of the demo “was embarrassing.” Finally, Gordon asked Kyson for his thoughts. Kyson explained that he wanted to make the audience smile. He added, “And that’s who I am.”

Gordon acknowledged that but told Kyson that he didn’t showcase the functions of the product. “I felt for you out there, because I know damn well, you’re better than that,” Gordon told Kyson.

The team admitted that they didn’t practice enough with the products. “I’m more nervous now giving away $250,000 to one of you,” Gordon said. He was savage during this Grilling. Finally, Gordon called out Kyson and Ali for dropping the ball and Rose for setting “the wrong tone.”

Who is leaving the competition?

Kyson Clark is leaving the competition.

“When this competition is done, I’m going to reach out and check in on you,” Gordon told Kyson. They embraced as Kyson prepared to leave. “This has been the best experience of my life,” he told the group. “And I would have never thought … I would have never thought that I would have [done] something like this. So, thank you so much.”

In his final confessional, Kyson stated, “I was scared to speak. Scared to be myself and Food Stars has [given] me the gift to use my voice. I may not be going home with the $250,000, but what I have gained, I can’t put a price tag on that.”

But wait! There’s more! Gordon told the remainder of his team to sit down. “I’m not done,” he told the shocked contestants.

Who else is leaving the competition?

Rose Hankins of Gordon Ramsay's Food Stars Season 2.

Rose Hankins is leaving the competition.

Wow! A double elimination! In her final confessional, a tearful Rose stated, “It sucks … really sucks. I have learned that never giving up gives you something good, and this has been something so good.” She added, “I’m going to pick myself back up and I’m going to use what I learned here going forward because that can take me so, so far.”

After the dust settled, Gordon told his remaining team that he didn’t see the special spark during this challenge that he first saw in them. Yikes! If I were on Team Ramsay, I would be curled up in the fetal position nursing a cocktail.

Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars airs on Wednesdays, 9:00-10:00 PM ET on FOX.

Kandi Burruss Doesn’t Have ‘Intentions’ to Ever Make RHOA Return

Real Housewives of Atlanta alum Kandi Burruss left the building. And she has no intentions of coming back.

After starring in the Bravo show for thirteen seasons (Season 2 through Season 14), Kandi’s got too many other things to do.

The multi-talented singer, songwriter, actor, producer, director, and entrepreneur is looking forward to being the manager of her schedule. No more explaining to RHOA producers why she can’t be there to film on certain days. She’s looking forward to giving her time, energy, and attention to all the projects she wants to focus on.

Gone girl

In a recent interview with The Morning Hustle, Kandi clearly stated that RHOA is in her rear-view. The host asked, “Are you gonna leave the Housewives?”

Kandi was quick to respond, “I already left.”  The mom of three is currently on tour with her group Xscape as part of The Queens of R&B Tour. Celebrating R&B music and women’s power, the tour will perform in 30 cities across the United States during Summer 2024.

“I wouldn’t even have been able to do this tour if I was still filming,” the Bedroom Kandi founder added. “[Season 15 is] filming right now, and, you know, last season, they was all complaining, ’cause I was always gone doing something else.”

“There are a lot of things that I wanted to do, that I’m trying to make happen right now,” she continued. The end of Season 14 seemed like a good time to exit and pursue her other interests.

“But it’s more like a pause, right?” asked the host.

“I don’t really have intentions of going back,” Kandi admitted. “Okay? Like, I don’t want to leave people hanging, like, ‘I’m gonna be back next year.’ Right now I’m focused on what I’m doing.”

All episodes of Real Housewives of Atlanta are now streaming on Peacock.

Jenn Tran Teases ‘Best Two Months’ of Her Life on The Bachelorette

Season 21 of The Bachelorette premieres on ABC July 8. Will star Jenn Tran be glued to her TV?

“Are you kidding me? I’m not going to watch the best two months of my life? Of course, I am!” Jenn said. “I am so excited for it to premiere. I feel like it’s so weird … This crazy journey happened, and I am just so excited to be able to watch it back.”

Jenn competed on Joey Graziadei’s season of The Bachelor but was sent home during week seven. Some fans were confused when host Jesse Palmer announced Jenn as the next Bachelorette during the After the Final Rose special. Though she may not have been the lead fans expected, she will be the first-ever Asian Bachelorette, so I wish her well. She’s a trailblazer.

A surprising choice

Normally, producers choose the next Bachelorette from one of the last girls standing on The Bachelor, so the choice of someone from closer to the “middle of the pack” was surprising. Even I went, “Who?!” when her name was announced. She was totally unexpected.

As Jenn told People in this week’s issue, public reaction to her selection as the Bachelorette has “definitely been a mix.”

“I won’t say that it’s all been positive because racism still exists,” she continued. “I have gotten a lot of hate messages, but along with that, I’ve also gotten so many people who have been so grateful to see somebody like me on their screen. [I’m] grateful and honored that I get to do that for people because growing up, I never had that. I am becoming the role model that I’ve always wanted to see as a little girl.”

“It’s been tough,” Jenn admitted regarding some of the unkind messages she’s received. “I was announced, and then, I … immediately left for filming.”

Per normal show policies, Jenn was without her phone during filming, “so I had no idea what the world was saying until I came back from this amazing experience. I was so excited and so hopeful, and then, I go online and I read a bajillion people’s opinions on everything. That was really disappointing.” Never read your own press, honey. There will always be haters.

Her final goal changed during the season

Despite all the negativity surrounding her selection as the Bachelorette, the physician’s assistant student is pleased with how her season evolved. “I’m very happy … with the way everything panned out,” she shared. She learned along the way that she was there “[to find out] about myself and what I wanted in a relationship. There was so much growth.”

That growth included changing her mind about what she wanted the end of her journey to look like. Does that mean she didn’t choose anyone? Did she pull a Kelly Taylor and say in the end, “I choose me!”

“When you start on the journey, you’re so hopeful for an engagement,” Jenn said. “Then as you go through the journey, it’s like, what [does] an engagement really mean to you? Is it just a ring, or is it a commitment? What I really was looking for was a lasting partner, so I think my definition of that really changed throughout the journey.”

She’s also not putting a timeline on her future. Admitting that when she was younger, she tried to plan at what age she would get engaged, get married, and have kids. But she realizes now life doesn’t work that way.

“Nothing has ever panned out that way,” she confessed. “So I’m just going to take it one day at a time and be hopeful for the future.”

The Bachelorette Season 21 premieres July 8 on ABC.

Race to Survive: New Zealand Episode 8 Recap: Rules Weren’t Meant To Be Broken

As reality TV fans, we’ve all experienced an uncountable amount of shocking, on-screen moments. Villains have been unmasked. Marriages have been upended. Backs have been stabbed. It’s what we expect from this genre. However what went down on the latest episode of Race to Survive: New Zealand takes the trophy for one of the wildest things we’ve seen this year.

In Race to Survive: New Zealand Episode 8, “A Rule Was Broken,” four teams crossed Race 4’s finish line. However, the producers interrupted their Survival Camp celebrations with a shocking announcement. A team violated the rules, leading to a surprising disqualification that totally upended the competition. Let’s get into it.

Race 4, Day 2

The episode picked up at the start of Race 4, Day 2. Four of the five remaining teams were still on the course, waiting to bushwhack their way to the finish line. Meanwhile, the Smokejumpers were already chilling at Survival Camp. They navigated through the nighttime to make it to a first-place finish, so they were just chilling and snacking on the kiwi fruit they earned as their first-place perk.

The Divorcees and the River Guides were tied for second place. After spending the entire competition in first place, you could tell that the River Guides were feeling a little salty about sitting in second. They quickly took off into the forest, reluctant to get too close to their competition.

A few minutes later, they had a change of heart. They realized that navigating a mazelike forest would be easier with four people navigating. Swallow that pride, Corry and Oliver.

Eventually, the foursome crossed the finish line, and they did it together, tying for 2nd place. We don’t always see teamwork like this on Race to Survive, and we surely didn’t expect to see it between these two teams. Creighton said it felt like a “fellowship.” It certainly looked that way, too.

Elsewhere in New Zealand, the Oil Riggers were comfortably at the back of the pack, intentionally taking their time through the course to avoid injury. So far, that tactic seemed to be working. The worst thing they were dealing with was a stubbed toe. That’s not too bad considering people have exited the race with concussions and swollen ankles.

The Hunters bow out

Father and son-in-law duo, Ryan and Bronsen, started Race 4, Day 2 off on a completely different note from the rest of the teams. After battling knee pain for the majority of the season, Ryan made the emotional decision that their time in New Zealand should come to an end.

This decision came just in the nick of time. The camera zoomed in on his knee, and it literally looked like a grapefruit. He also said his wrist started acting up too, which made him concerned for his career. He’s a “hunting guide,” and you can’t do that professionally with injured joints from a reality TV show.

The Hunters gave the signal to the producers, and a helicopter came to take them away to safety after racing 100 miles through the New Zealand wilderness. Like most of the eliminations on this show, it didn’t really seem like a defeat. They made it this far, and that’s worth celebrating.

In an emotional interview, the duo reflected on the importance of exiting the race when they did, and the special bond they’ll share forever after the experience.

“We weren’t brought out here for money. We were brought out to learn what the true meaning of life is,” Ryan explained, before returning home to his career of killing animals for sport.

The Wolf and the sheep

Speaking of killing animals, the Oil Riggers came across a major discovery during their snail-like journey through the racecourse. They knew they were in last place, but when they stumbled upon a huge flock of sheep, they recognized a huge opportunity. Instead of trying to push ahead and get in front of the next team, they decided to take some time to hunt down a sheep. Food is fuel, and in a race like this, that’s just as important as pace.

We certainly don’t recommend trying this at home, but Kennedy and Nik sat on the hillside and strategized their attack on the sheep. Nik distracted them by running in one direction, and then Kennedy swooped in like someone out of an action movie. She chased down the slowest sheep, tackled it, and slit its throat.

This sheep was just the latest victim of the Race to Survive contestants. First, a goose had her eggs stolen. Then, they started going after the eels. In a previous race, Creighton wiped out an entire family of hedgehogs.

If you’re an animal in New Zealand, you should be terrified. However, the Oil Riggers felt like they just conquered the world. They basically harvested a year’s supply of mutton.

After butchering the lamb, the Oil Riggers pressed forward towards the End Crate, with not much hope of having a medallion waiting for them. After being in last place for the whole race and then spending hours making lamb chops, how could there be a medallion left for them?

Well, strange things happened in New Zealand, and there sure was a medallion waiting for them after all. A producer showed up and flipped the game upside down with some shocking news about one of the teams.

Dismissed and disqualified

We’re still over here trying to scrape our jaws off the floor from the information that the producers shared with the group. They came over and announced that the River Guides, Oliver and Corry were disqualified from the race, effective immediately, because of a violation of a major rule.

We knew this moment was coming because the trailers teased it, but who would have predicted that the first-place finishers would be the ones facing disqualification? How could that happen? Apparently, Corry ate something he shouldn’t have.

It seemed like the show intentionally tried to avoid the grisly details, but they’ve mentioned weka birds multiple times throughout the show. They made a point to tell us in previous episodes that they were off-limits. You can’t hunt them or eat them, but they’ve been scurrying around survival camp all season long. We’ve seen them causing chaos and tempting everyone with their big juicy bodies. In Episode 4, Corry joked that they looked like they would make a good sandwich.

Although they never outright said that Corry ate a weka bird, it certainly seemed like that’s what they were implying. Perhaps they kept the details vague because there’s a hefty fine for killing one of these birdies.

“So, I made a mistake. It was shortsighted. It was foolish, but the competition is very real and the difficulty of this is real. Survival in the bush of New Zealand isn’t easy,” Corry explained.

“We did have strategies in place for the racing, but we didn’t prepare for the hunger,” he continued.

Ultimately, Corry admitted that his instincts took over. He knew he was breaking a rule, but in his mind, eating seemed more important. Perhaps he didn’t think he would get caught amid the rest of the bloodshed happening on the course? Either way, he offered a heartfelt apology before he and Oliver made their exit.

“What I did disrespected New Zealand, and I’m sorry,” Corry told the cameras.

And then there were three

The Hunters, the River Guides, and the Smokejumpers have been the frontrunners throughout this entire competition. With two of them eliminated in one swoop, this game just changed dramatically. Suddenly, we had our final three, and everyone felt confused.

Technically, there should have been one more race to determine who would go into the finale. Instead, the Divorcees, the Oil Riggers, and the Smokejumpers automatically survived their way to the final gauntlet to determine who would take home the $500,000.

At Survival Camp, the emotions were all over the place. The Oil Riggers felt relieved to still compete and were riding high on the fact that they had a whole sheep to fuel them through the final race. The Smokejumpers were also feeling positive because their biggest competition had been eliminated. They’re the team to beat, and they know it.

Meanwhile, the Divorcees were in a good place emotionally, but perhaps not in the best spot for the race. In a heartfelt conversation, they talked about how the pressure of the race helped heal some of the trauma from their divorce.

To be clear, it doesn’t sound like they’re getting back together anytime soon, but they’re not enemies either. That’s worth celebrating, even if they didn’t have much food to eat at Survival Camp.

At the end of Episode 8, our final three prepared for the grand finale of Race to Survive: New Zealand. Of course, it’s bringing them their biggest twist yet. It’s a time trial, and they’ll have to navigate part of the course without their partner. As if this show wasn’t dangerous enough, now they’re going to send them into the jungle alone? Thankfully, there’s an end in sight for this complicated race and a $500,000 check waiting for whoever crosses the finish line first.

Race to Survive: New Zealand continues on the USA Network, Monday nights at 11/10c.
