Mandy Moore has spent decades making music, and now she is watching that passion spark in the next generation. The singer recently opened up about her son Gus’ growing interest in music. She talked about the sweet way he is beginning to explore the family’s musical world.
Mandy Moore’s son is taking an interest in music already, and she thinks it’s ‘fun’
Mandy Moore’s eldest son, five-year-old August “Gus” Harrison Goldsmith, seems to be following his parents’ musical footsteps. Moore shares Gus and two other children with husband Taylor Goldsmith, who is a member of the band Dawes.
The actress tells PEOPLE that Gus is already showing his songwriting skills. “We have a little songwriter in our midst. Our oldest has already written his first album,” she says. “There’s nine songs. It’s only 21 minutes long, but he wants to listen to it in the car.”
According to Moore, Gus often makes up songs and enjoys listening to them afterward. “It’s so much fun,” she said.
Gus’ new album was recorded on his parents’ phones, with Goldsmith playing the piano. Moore credits her husband with influencing Gus’ musical tastes by introducing him to artists such as Tom Petty, David Bowie, the Beatles, and Bob Dylan. “We don’t have to listen to kids’ music per se,” she added. “That’s a win in my book.”
Moore said Gus recently discovered her 1999 hit “Candy” and now wants to hear it during car rides. “I don’t know how or why because I would not play that for him,” she told PEOPLE. However, Gus has become such a fan that Moore has had to put limits on how often the song plays.
“I’ve had to put a moratorium on it,” she joked.
Gus has also noticed a connection between his age and his mother’s during her early music career. Moore recalled him saying, “I’m the same age that you were when you made that song.” She jokingly replied, “No, you’re five, but you are closer probably to that age than I am to that age,”
The actress was 15 when she released her debut album, So Real, in 1999, which featured “Candy.” Now, decades later, her son’s interest in music is giving her a funny reminder of that early chapter in her career.
