Princess Diana and King Charles are often remembered for their very different personalities. However, one of Diana’s former bodyguards says they shared a surprising habit that many royal fans never got to see. According to him, both royals made a point of personally connecting with people through handwritten letters.

Diana’s former bodyguard says she wrote warm, funny letters constantly, much like King Charles

Princess Diana’s former bodyguard Ken Wharfe revealed to Marie Claire that the late princess wrote letters prolifically throughout their years together. Wharfe said Diana wrote thank-you notes whenever someone showed her kindness or hospitality. He even admitted he sometimes encouraged her to slow down because she wrote so many. “Diana was a prolific letter writer,” Wharfe told the publication. “She wrote constantly, and her letters were wonderfully warm and often very funny.”

The former bodyguard said the habit reflected Diana’s aristocratic upbringing. She believed it was important to personally thank people for their generosity, even as her marriage to King Charles was falling apart. Wharfe noted that this was one quality Diana shared with the monarch. According to Buckingham Palace, King Charles writes more than 2,400 letters every year, including personal notes to members of the public.

The former royal protection officer also described Diana as someone who never forgot acts of kindness. Wharfe said she often bought small gifts for people she met during royal visits. He recalled one detective in Northern Ireland whom Diana admired. After learning the man enjoyed Irish whiskey, she reportedly made sure to bring him a bottle whenever they visited.

Wharfe also shared a story from a fundraising gala in Washington, D.C. He said a Secret Service agent helped Diana safely down a staircase after photographers’ flashes temporarily blinded her. The next day, Diana wanted to thank the agent with a signed photograph. However, the man hid out of embarrassment after learning that royal protocol discouraged touching members of the Royal Family.

Wharfe said he eventually convinced the agent to accept Diana’s gift. Looking back, the former bodyguard said those thoughtful gestures reflected who Diana truly was behind palace walls. “She wanted them to leave with a happy memory,” Wharfe said. He explained that it did not matter whether the person was a police officer, a security agent or someone she had only just met.
