Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife Mackenzie Scott announced that she gave $7.1 billion to nonprofit groups in 2025. This is a sharp increase from recent years and one of the largest single-year totals in philanthropy. In a short essay on her website, Scott framed the number as only part of the story. She said the gifts reflect her view of generosity.

Jeff Bezos‘ ex-wife, Mackenzie Scott, wrote in the essay, “This dollar total will likely be reported in the news, but any dollar amount is a vanishingly tiny fraction of the personal expressions of care being shared into communities this year.” The 2025 gifts follow $2.6 billion in 2024 and $2.1 billion in 2023. It brings her total giving since 2019 to about $26.3 billion.
A large share of 2025 funding by Scott went to historically Black colleges and universities. More than a dozen HBCUs have received $783 million in gifts tracked so far this year. Rutgers professor Marybeth Gasman praised Scott’s impact. They said, “One of the things that I really admire about Mackenzie Scott is that she is like an equity machine.”
In her essay, Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife Mackenzie Scott continued by writing, “Generosity and kindness engage the same pleasure centers in the brain as sex, food, and receiving gifts, and they improve our health and long-term happiness as well.”
She added, “The peace-fostering byproducts of one unexpected act of kindness toward a stranger of a different background or beliefs might inspire a beneficial chain reaction that goes on for years. Respect, understanding, insight, empathy, forgiveness, inspiration – all of these are meaningful contributions to others.”
Scott also said she is moving more of her wealth into investments that align with her goals, not only into vehicles that chase returns. She said, “There are many ways to influence how we move through the world, and where we land.”
