Who would have thought we’d have a Dance Moms post that isn’t about Abby Lee Miller’s ever prolonged fraud sentencing from her many (many, many!) legal woes? Thank goodness for former Dance Moms star (and Abby’s one-time golden ticket) Maddie Ziegler for giving us something positive to write about concerning the show!
Before becoming Sia’s sidekick, Maddie was center stage of the ALDC. She was tasked with carrying every routine, winning every number, and trying to remain tight with her friends as their mothers feuded over Abby’s favoritism of Maddie and her increasing amount of show biz breaks outside the studio. While Maddie is no longer competing, she is taking advantage of all the opportunities she garnered thanks to her time in the Lifetime spotlight. Most recently, the fourteen-year-old has written a book entitled The Maddie Diaries.

In an interview with People.com, Maddie reflects briefly on her Dance Moms past while skirting questions about Abby with the ease of a true entertainment veteran. If you don’t have anything nice to say, right? The teen admits that she has never watched an entire episode of the show that made her famous. She reveals, “We lived through it, so I don’t feel like we have to watch it, and it was just so much drama that I don’t want to see it again,” adding, “I hate watching myself…it’s just weird to me.”
Maddie also shares that she’s glad to have her time at the ALDC behind her while dodging whether she maintains a relationship with her former dance teacher. She recalls, “It was so much pressure! I learned a lot of lessons. I had the craziest time when I was with her and on that team. I’m really glad that I did move on from that, and I did learn a lot from her and we did have some fun times. But I feel like now, I’ve never been happier in my life.”
Asserting, “I was stressed at 11 years old, which shouldn’t happen,” Maddie is adamant that her days of dancing competitively are done. She continues, “A trophy doesn’t mean anything!” However, she does still keep up with her ALDC teammates (mainly those still on the show) via text messages, random get-togethers, and the occasional awards show, but concedes, “I don’t really get to see them that much because they are filming in LA now.”
Her recently published memoir is touted as a candid view into her rise to fame with anecdotes about dancing and touring, while answering questions from fans. Shockingly (or is it?), Abby doesn’t make the cut when it comes to the book’s content. So there you have it…a fourteen-year-old that has accomplished more since the age of eight than I have in pretty much my entire life. What a feeling!
