Six months into a war President Donald Trump once predicted would be over in four to six weeks, Vice President JD Vance gave no new timeline for when the fighting with Iran will stop. Also, there wasn’t any update on when drivers might see $3-a-gallon gas again.
Fielding questions from reporters at a White House briefing, Vance made the case that America’s role has already shifted from active combat to something smaller in scale, arguing the label “war” no longer fits months after the last major U.S. military operations wound down.
JD Vance says the US-Iran conflict’s end depends on Tehran stopping attacks on ships
Pressed on a timeline, Vance handed the question back across the table. “You’re asking me a question like, ‘When will the Iranians stop shooting at ships?'” Vance said. “The reality is I don’t know the answer to that question. You’d have to ask the Iranians.” Diplomacy, he added, isn’t happening at all while the attacks continue. “We’re not talking to them,” Vance said, confirming there’s no active channel with Tehran right now.
JD Vance pointed to a slow recovery in tanker traffic as evidence Iran’s grip on global energy markets is loosening amid war. Vessels have started moving again through the strait’s southernmost lane, the stretch that keeps the most distance from Iranian shores. Ship-tracking company Kpler counts only a handful of daily crossings now, a steep drop from the roughly 100 ships a day that used the route before the war began.
Moreover, a Labor Day target for average nationwide gas prices to hit $3, floated by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent back in July, has already slipped past without being met. Vance wasn’t willing to name a new date. “I’m not going to make a promise about when it’s going to return to three dollars,” he said.
All in all, what Vance didn’t offer on Thursday was any real marker for how or when the standoff resolves. Both the shooting and the price of gas, by his own account, hinge on choices only Iran can make.
